The J49 was designed by Børge Mogensen in 1944 for the Danish furniture co-op FDB’s innovative concept shop in Copenhagen. The showroom’s interior was modelled after the modest wartime apartments of the era, with furniture displayed so that the customer could envision it in their own home.

FDB was sympathetic to the difficult economy of the time, and Mogensen’s philosophy that good design should be accessible by everyone made the J49 the perfect chair to suit every home. The clean, bold lines created an aesthetic that allowed the chair to either blend in with the person’s existing environment or be the centrepiece of the home.

Reintroduced in 2011 by FREDERICIA, the J49 is constructed in Mogensen’s favourite wood, beech. The familiar, yet modern, design is available with clear lacquer, painted white or black. An untreated version is also available to encourage one’s individuality and paint the chair in any colour or pattern they like.
