The evolution of chairs

Chairs are essential items of our daily life. We invite you to dive in the history of the evolution of chairs with 16 projects of well known designers and their projects.

The simple form of a chair was first seen 5800 years ago and at that time, its form resembles more to a stool than a chair. The Egyptians were the first to add the back support, allowing people to seat erect. Ivory and noble wood was also introduced, creating more sophisticated chairs.

After a few more centuries after them, armrests and footrests were added to make chairs even more comfortable. As the world evolved throughout the modern centuries, the chairs evolved too, following each period styles and trends. New technology allowed men to introduce new materials to the production of chairs, such as metal, burnt wood, many types of plastic, concrete, leather and most recently, eco-friendly materials.

We have selected some recent projects of renowned designers to show you that chairs - be it handmade or factory-made; classic or modern styles - will never become obsolete.
